Elite monitoring network for detailed climate data collection
In the winter of 2019-20, RinkWatch launched a pilot project called the “Sentinel Rink” network. RinkWatch participants in strategic locations across North America work with a dedicated project assistant to collect detailed daily information about skating conditions.
This enhanced monitoring helps us learn more about the many site-specific characteristics that affect rinks, as well as how precipitation and extreme weather events affect skating conditions. Sentinel Rink participants receive personalized support, detailed reports, and exclusive program benefits.
Sentinel Rink participants collect more detailed daily observations than standard RinkWatch members, providing high-quality climate data for research.
Each Sentinel Rink participant works directly with a dedicated project assistant who provides guidance, support, and ensures data quality.
At the end of each skating season, Sentinel participants receive detailed, customized reports about their rink’s performance and regional comparisons.
Receive cool RinkWatch merchandise and family gifts as a thank you for your enhanced participation in climate research.
Your detailed data directly contributes to peer-reviewed climate research and helps scientists understand winter weather patterns.
Connect with other Sentinel participants across North America and share experiences about winter conditions in your region.
Access exclusive educational materials about climate science, weather patterns, and the science behind your observations.
Be recognized as a key contributor to climate science research and receive acknowledgment in research publications.
Get early access to research findings and detailed analysis of regional climate trends affecting outdoor skating.
The Sentinel Rink program accepts a limited number of participants each season to ensure quality support and data collection.
Contact our team to express your interest in becoming a Sentinel Rink participant for the upcoming season.
Our team reviews applications based on geographic location, commitment level, and data collection capability.
Selected participants receive training materials, data collection protocols, and are paired with a project assistant.
Collect detailed daily observations throughout the skating season with ongoing support from your project assistant.
Ready to make a significant contribution to climate science research? Apply to become a Sentinel Rink participant and help us understand how climate change is affecting winter traditions across North America.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Early application is recommended as spaces are limited.
